Hi everybody!
I’m using Linux Mint and I mostly play via Steam, but Metro Rexud 2033 was on giveaway in GOG so I would like to play that.
I have Wine installed but I ”locked” the version for a specific guitar app to work.
Which client etc would you suggest is the easiest for playing GOG games on Linux? I’m a noob and an idiot so please explain to me like i’m five years old.
Thanks for your help in advance!
Heroic games launcher, 100%
Lutris
I think Heroic Games Launcher is the better option, seconded by Lutris which I use if I have issue with some games through HGL which is quiete rare. There is also JunkStore as a DeckyLoader plugin but it is pretty bare bones and since you’re on Mint I would say Heroic is what you should use.
I was going to say Lutris since that is what i’m using since forever for GOG Games. It even has it directly integrated nowadays and can be connected to your GOG account to basically one-click install the games you own.
But since everybody else here writes “Heroic”! i guess i have to give that a try now…
They both solve the same problem, but Heroic does it a little better by not needing the Epic launcher to be installed.
I still use Lutris for pirated games.
Since no one mentioned it yet.
You can also add the executable to Steam as a non-steam game and in its settings you can configure Proton as compatibility tool.
That works quite well for some stuff.
I did this with a portable version of Turtle WoW and it worked perfectly, even with mods.
This is what I do on the Steam Deck
Lutris or Heroic (but I mostly recommend Lutris) Eventhough Heroic is better for GOG games
I’d throw in another vote for Heroic. I tend to use it for pretty much everything that I have that’s not on Steam. It’ll let you choose what version of wine/proton-GE/proton you need to get your games working.
You can sign into GOG inside the app and have access to your library. Same for Epic Games Store and Prime Gaming, as well as the storefronts (tho the Epic one isn’t working for me rn, but the other two do). After signing in, you go into the library view and then it should list all the games it finds in your store libraries, then you can pick the one you want to download and install. It’ll ask you where you want to install it, and then under ‘Show Wine Settings’ you can pick what version of Wine or Proton you want to use
the Epic one isn’t working for me rn,
Normal operation, Epic just sucks.
Yes, epic is weird. For some reason it doesn’t let me claim free games from heroic for a few weeks now.
yeah same issue i’ve been having too. I guess Epic changed something on their side
Install Heroic - it takes care of everything for you. It downloads and configures wine and acts as a client for GOG to download and install the games.
It also supports UMU, so you can use proton along with it perfectly fine too
That giveaway is also currently active on Steam as well, so one option is to grab the game on Steam and play it that way.
Yep got it myself.
As the other post said, Heroic Launcher is great. I’ve also had good luck with Lutris
Thanks everybody! I’ll give Heroic a try.
First post outside communities I’m trying to build, Lemmy seems very helpful and fun!
Heroic is the way to go. Skip Lutris and bottles to avoid complications.
As an aside, if you’re an avid gamer and once you get comfortable with Linux, I would keep Bazzite Linux on your radar. It has a lot of gaming stuff configured out of the box. http://bazzite.gg/
Heroic game launcher or lutris
Just to add one more thing to the stack, Bottles is quite nice if literally nothing else works. I’ve had problems with Heroic and exactly two games, and in both of those cases, spinning up a fresh bottle specifically to install GOG Galaxy was a flawless solution.
