There was an old HP touchsmart that my partner had laying around. It’s terrible. Pentium Processor, standard HDD, with no dedicated graphics so running much of anything on it is out. No wireless AC, so it has to be a 2.4ghz network, and I don’t have a hardwire in the bedroom. So I just threw Mint on it installed RustDesk because I didn’t have a wireless mouse and keyboard or anywhere to put them if I had them. About a week into realizing it had some troubles playing larger movies (even mp4s from the machine no matter the player) I moved to 720. I couldn’t tell the difference between 720p and 1080p from across the room on a 22" screen anyways. Now all the streams work fine. Starting to realize the last time I bought a monitor was 2009. Anyways, 4K on my TV in the living looks great, but it really isn’t needed for standard enjoyment. Especially if I’m only half ass paying attention.

I’ll have to look into this, thanks for the suggestion. Been installing games with Lutris, then if they don’t work I try all the proton versions there, then try non-steam games and still run into some that I just give up on. Having a mounted ISO on games that ask for a disk on startup I haven’t figure out a way to get Lutris/Steam to recognize yet. Hopefully this will help.

I seem to remember $40 PS2/Dreamcast era $50 PS3/360 era, $60 PS4/5/Xbox S/S era. And now people are saying $80 for next gen. Sorry I know I dropped a lot of consoles, but was that pretty standard everywhere?

From what I know about it, it has a modified kernal that is smaller cutting out support for a few things . Smaller kernal, standardly more efficient and stable. Throw in that it comes in a read only setup that will wipe changes added via pacman the next time you do an update. Customizability is also limited. Flatpacks better than snap many will argue, but snap won’t even run on SteamOS from what I’ve read even after manually dialing the read only mode and knowing you will have to reinstall all your changes after the next update.

Ever found a way around Lutris asking for a CD for games? I was using Lutris and one of the games I tried installing from a mounted ISO installed, yet I can’t find any way to get Lutris to recognize the mounted drive as the CD. Tried adding it to Steam as a non-steam game as well and get the same result. Tried various versions of proton and wine, but I assume I need to direct it to the ISO somewhere… But couldn’t find anyone who had an answer online.

Device made with software specifically for purpose performs better than generic machine with generic software designed to do a wide range of things. All of my machines are on Linux distros, but this just seems like a no brainer to me. It’s like years ago when the mustang had a 4.6L V8. It was the same engine used in the Ford explorer. Will the Mustang beat the Explorer to 60, of course. But the Explorer will also transport 5 people to the beach with coolers and beach gear and drive in the sand.

It’s good that SteamOS is doing well, but the variety of tasks people are using Windows for cannot be performed on SteamOS.

Motors get tiny as shit apparently from what I’m seeing, but the smallest batteries I’m seeing are 0.5 mAh, 3.2 by 2.5 mm.

I see tiny motors that are 3mm by 8mm, and run at 2.7v. Using that motor and battery we are at .00135 watt hours. Realistically you would need 2 of those to make wings work so we would have to half that before we get to discussing controllers.

Yeah, that and the transmission of data or storage sounds outlandish. Maybe those just have a microphone and aren’t trying to record/store video.

I run Mint Cinnamon on a machine in my room for media. But also run a Jellyfin server off a pop_os server. My partner has a laptop that she updated to Win 11 that has had Audio issues ever since. When I boot to a live disk (linux), no issues. I’ve tried so many fixes for her system and it appears her step mother is having the same issue on another Win 11 machine. I’ve been trying to find a way to ensure she can run all the games she likes on an OS without being a headache. The Sims (probably 2,3,4). Stardew Valley, and such. Steam I have had luck with, but The Sims seems to come from an EA app which I believe I can run through Lutris. I have been hesitant to move that laptop because I want to be sure all of her games will end up working without hours of configuration that may break when she mods something in the game and needs a reinstall of the game itself. Has anyone had any luck with the EA app? I figure if she’s paid for the licenses, I would rather use them than torrenting it all.

I seem to remember liking Resistance: Fall of Man, but it isn’t something you’ll play over and over. But the couch co-op story mode was fun to play with my partner back in 2007 or so.

A Way Out was fun recently for couch co-op story as well, but I’m not sure if that is the type of shooter you are looking for. I had never played a game like it before, was pretty cool.
