I had such a huge, dumb smile on my face when the alien did the OK hand gesture straight up and then she tilted her OK hand gesture at the end without the alien doing it for her.

It’s an odd choice. The animation for the OP is fantastic, but the song is really not to my taste. It is clearly deliberate as aiko has done other anisongs and they have been more typical (she also does the ED for this show).
Just wanted to shout out that there is also an active discussion going on over here in the !gundam@ani.social community in case you find this thread and wonder where all the comments are.
The fact that NYT wrote a whole article about this series just goes to show the level of expectation being placed on this show due to the staff involved. After watching the first episode, the production value is certainly there, but I remain unconvinced that the story is able to live up to it.
I kind of went back and forth with that myself too. A lot of the members of this community are based on ani.social, but due to federation, a lot aren’t as well and could still interact with a community on ml. You bring up a good point though that lemmy is happy to make local versions of a community even if it won’t federate out. So, you could go to the local version of the MHA community and make posts all day, but only ani.social users could see it. Federation is confusing enough for people, I think that you are right, I will remove the ml community.
Honestly, I wrote and rewrote that paragraph half a dozen times convincing myself of both sides while doing so. I don’t want to be in the position of putting a thumb on the scale of picking community winners and losers. That is why I have both gundam communities listed for example, as they are both somewhat active, even if I do moderate one of them. So, in the future, if there is a community that is clearly most active on the ml instance, I would likely include it. I can make a slight change to the bot to mention that it would be inaccessible from the ani.social instance though.
I plan on keeping this pinned for a couple days at most. I don’t really like having three pinned posts at the same time, so if people aren’t really engaging with it any longer, I will unpin with prejudice.
Compass wasn’t even on my radar until I just saw this comment. Is it so bad it’s funny? Or is it so bad it’s bad? Your description of it makes it sound funny bad.
Episode 2 of Kowloon made it much more obvious to me that the pacing was lightning fast. I totally agree that it has been super intriguing though. For as fast as they are going, they are still managing to set a good vibe with the setting in Kowloon Walled City.
Great choices! I am also pretty frustrated with the Lazarus situation. I might just wait and binge it after the season if people are liking it. Hopefully the JP audio / EN subs would be available by then as well.
I loved Campfire Cooking and its OP is one that I still listen to regularly. It’s one of those shows where the story is fine, but the production value of the first season was way better than it had any right to be. I have read pretty far into the manga and I think that the anime definitely elevated things in that sense. There is also a whole Sui spinoff manga that I am up to date on (even after eventually dropping the main series) because Sui is just too darn cute.
As an anime only, I could tell this episode that we were blazing through the story really fast and skipping big chunks. However, it hasn’t been so bad that I couldn’t follow. As for the whole season, I remember reading that they are planning on an anime-only ending, but one that was written by the original author. So, look forward to that I guess.
I haven’t watched this, but just seeing these screenshots takes me back in time to such a nostalgic era of anime. Thanks for sharing!
I had the same thought! What the hell just happened off screen!?
Weekly ranking roundup:
Credit to /u/Abysswatcherbel for making the chart for reddit karma and /u/Nooble5 for the Anime Trending chart.
Seems like Witch Watch really hit the ground running with its premiere on the rankings. It took the top spot on the AC chart and the second highest premiere on the reddit chart. The other show that did well on both charts is Kowloon Generic Romance which had a pretty darn good premiere. Other than those, the charts don’t reallyi align all that much. Time will tell as the season goes how things shake out.
Getting deeper into the season and I got the opportunity to watch some more shows this past week:
Yes! This has been great to see. I have also noticed some new names over on the !manga@ani.social community as well. In small communities like this even a couple people actively posting and commenting makes a big difference.
Bocchi the Rock
Fist of the North Star
Also, I’ve never heard an argument/fight being referred to as a “row”
I am not watching this show, but just saw this comment as I was going through rikka replies. The use of “row” meaning an argument is a bit antiquated, but still not that out of the ordinary. I see it more commonly in British writing/speaking than American. Also, when used in this way, it is typically pronounced like the beginning of the word round rather than the begging of road.
sigh
This is quite disappointing. I just want good subs with Japanese audio. I don’t know what the issue is, but it seems like this might be a case where the best quality is going to be found by sailing the seas.
I am just waiting for this show to drop the emotional bomb on me one of these episodes. It has been such a great time so far, but there is something bubbling under the surface that I am sure will wreck me sooner or later. A couple times now, Yachiyo has seemed to glitch in some way, and it is being left entirely unexplained. Between that and the occasional heartfelt flashback to the hotel manager, I am preparing myself to be hurt.
